About the 458 SOCOM Wildcat
The initial offering was determined to be the .458 SOCOM Wildcat because of its awesome, unprecedented reputation.
“The impetus [for developing the .458 SOCOM] was an informal (“beer and barbeque”) discussion with a senior member of the US special operations community regarding the apparent lack of effectiveness of the 5.56 x 45 cartridge in recent war usage. In particular, reports from the Task Force Ranger in Mogadishu, Somalia complained that multiple shots were required to neutralize members of the opposing force, leading to a formal request to develop a new cartridge that would deliver far more energy from short barrels at relatively short distances. After the design was completed, Tony Rumore of Tromix Corp in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma was contacted to build the first prototype. Based on the ensuing favorable reviews, commercial production started, and the initial rifles were produced by Tromix. Currently, several firms offer rifles or upper assemblies in this caliber, including AR-15s, AK-47s, single shot and bolt action rifles.”

Development with Nationally-Known Projectile Manufacturers
This Big Bore round fit with the business philosophy of the Black Butterfly Ammunition founder Nick, who wanted to manufacturer premium hard-hitting ammunition for hunters. During testing, it was quickly discovered that there were not enough dedicated .458 SOCOM projectiles – many were retooled .45/70 projectiles that were also were too blunt, reducing the ability to “hang out” the rounds. During the first year of manufacturing, Black Butterfly Ammunition formed relationships with several nationally known projectile manufacturers to develop exclusive projectiles specifically for the .458 SOCOM, such as the CTX Migration, Maker Turbo Saw, Cutting Edge Maximus Giganticus, and the Hawk D600 Colossus to name a few.
